Some interesting facts about pens:

- According to guniessworldrecords.com, the worlds largest working ballpoint pen is 5.5 m (18ft) long and was created by Archarya Makunuri Srinivasa (India).
- Lewis Edson Waterman was the inventor of the capillary feed fountain pen in 1883. He founded the famous Waterman pen company.
- The ballpoint pen was first invented by László József Bíró, in 1938. He noticed that newspaper ink dried quickly but when he tried it in his fountain pen, it was too thick. Ballpoint pens are commonly referred to as Biros.
- Biro later sold the patent to Marcel Bich, founder of the Bic pen company. Bich was a keen sailor.
- Before modern pens came along, the Egyptians used reed straws as writing instruments. The inks were made of soot or red ochre mixed with vegetable gum and beeswax.
